What is Baptism?
You may have heard the story of the parting of the Red Sea. The Jewish people were enslaved by the Egyptians but God wanted to set them free. He had Moses lead the people to escape from their slavery but Pharaoh sent his army after them, the people were trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh’s army. God told Moses to raise his staff and the waters of the sea were parted, the Jewish people passed through the waters safely to a new life on the other side. Pharaoh’s army followed after them and the waters washed them away.
Every one of us is like a Jewish child born in Egypt, we are born in slavery. Not slavery to the Egyptians but slavery to our own selfishness. God wants to set us free and He does this through Baptism, just as Moses lead the Jewish people through the waters of the Red Sea, so the Priest leads us through the waters of Baptism to a new life in Jesus Christ.
