Confession

What is Confession?

Every one of us has done things we know are wrong and we feel sorry, we may have apologised to a person we hurt and we may even have prayed to God for forgiveness. So why do we need to confess our sins to a Priest?

When Jesus was born, God became a man and lived on earth. God did not want His relationship with mankind to be only a spiritual thing to be experienced only through prayer but He wanted also a physical encounter. Jesus founded the Church to be his body on earth saying “he who hears you, hears me” so that we are able to encounter Him through the Church he founded.

Jesus told the apostles “if you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven”, giving the Church the power to forgive sins in His name so that when our sins are forgiven by a Priest, they are really forgiven by God. For this reason, Confession is also known as the Sacrament of Reconciliation because through it we are forgiven and reconciled to God.

If you haven’t been to confession for a while or are not sure what to say or do, Fr Massie is more than happy to talk you through it.
